Lead Mental Health Technician

Job Summary and Qualifications
The Lead Mental Health Technician (MHT) serves as a clinical leader and mentor within the psychiatric care team. Operating under the general supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN), the Lead MHT delivers high-quality, patient-centered care while coordinating the daily activities of the MHT staff. This role combines direct patient care, such as assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs), documenting behavioral changes, and facilitating therapeutic groups with administrative and leadership responsibilities to ensure seamless unit operations and adherence to care plans.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for the MHT staff, assisting the RN in assigning daily duties, managing shift workflows, and ensuring adequate unit coverage.
- Orient, train, and mentor new MHTs on facility protocols, patient safety measures, and effective behavioral intervention techniques.
- Obtain and record initial and ongoing patient information throughout the cycle of care.
- Document observations, interactions, patient responses to performed activities, and any physical or behavioral changes at time of occurrence.
- You will lead or co-lead groups that include topics related to goals, community, leisure, diversionary, and wrap-up.
- You will assist with patient mobility by regularly turning, positioning, and ambulating as well as transferring patients to and from other units/departments.
- Clerical duties include assembling and maintaining charts, filing, answering and transferring phones, and relaying messages.
What qualifications you will need:
- Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
- Nonviolent Crisis Intervention must be obtained within 1 year of employment start date
- High School Diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, or a related field is highly desirable.
- Minimum of 2–3 years of experience in Mental Health required
